The North Bay Shipwreck and Wildlife tour is the ideal tour for nature lovers and shipwreck enthusiast alike.

Explore the bay with our new and amazing Clear Bottom Kayaks! This beginner friendly tour will lead you into North Bay, given it’s name by Great Lake mariners due to the fact that it is the Northern most safe harbor on the peninsula. Many ships were no match for the powerful storms and gales that the area produces. The murderous Alpena gale storm of October 1880 was especially disastrous. Waves pounded Cana Island Lighthouse, flooding the lower level of the keeper’s house and forcing the keeper and his family upstairs Many ships were lost in the great storm. Today the bay is scattered with shipwrecks, many that are still visible in the shallow waters. The most famous shipwrecks include the Cherubusco that sank in 1872, the G.J. Tracy 1881, and the A. Bronson 1875.

Your adventure begins on the beach of the beautiful Gordon Lodge waterfront resort! One of our knowledgeable and experienced guides will be there to welcome you and get you outfitted with a PFD and paddle.

Once you are all properly outfitted, your guide will go walk you through a dry land paddle lesson. Next, you will get situated and comfortable in your Clear Bottom Kayak before heading out into the bay. Your kayak will allow you to see what’s going on under the water and give you an amazing view of the shipwrecks!
Your guide will take you to explore shipwrecks, as well as the North Bay State Natural Area, a huge migratory area for birds. This area is rich with wildlife and famous for dragon fly sightings. Over 1.2 of the 1.5 million Whitefish in Lake Michigan spawn in North Bay every Fall, making the shallow bay popular for fishing. Your guide will take photos of you along your journey and post them to our Facebook page.

Your tour will last about 1.5 to 2 hours, and your memories will last a lifetime!
